Volunteering for 4 months
I am currently in the social work department at Metro State. I
read a case study that detailed the story of one woman and her
children's experience at a domestic violence shelter. I was
amazed at what they had experienced and the extreme measures they had
to resort to in order to find what I take for granted - a safe place to
be. I was also impressed with the level of understanding the
social worker had and the meaningful way, which she was able to help
this family. I thought, "I want to do that".
The reason I want to help women and children who are victims of
domestic violence is that this is a hideous crime that is swept under
the rug and treated like a secret in our society. Life is hard
enough without having to also endure violence and trauma in your
home. The work in this field appeals to me for two reasons:
I feel passionately that this abuse should not be tolerated; and it
offers me the opportunity to connect with the victims personally and,
hopefully, make a difference.
I haven't been at Gateway long enough to establish memories, but I have
never met a finer group of people than those at Gateway. During
training we were privileged to meet many of the staff and volunteers
who work so hard on behalf of the victims of DV. Each one of them
offered not only a wealth of information, but even more importantly,
were very kind, sensitive and empathic. They all were bright,
twinkly lights! I am happy and excited at the opportunity to work
along side them.
