Volunteering for over 1 year

I chose to work in the domestic violence movement after I did a class project.  For the project I interviewed a Gateway counselor about the services provided.  I was so impressed with what Gateway did to help women and children, that when it came time for my internship I chose Gateway.  I have been helping out ever since.

"You're black, you're poor, you're ugly, you're a woman, you're nothing at all!" (The Color Purple, 1985).  This line is from the movie "The Color Purple", set in the early twentieth century.  It illustrates the lack of respect that women received 100 years ago.  The only problem is you can still hear these words today in the early twenty-first century.  Although progress for women has been made in the last 100 years, we can still be made to feel like second-class citizens.  The reason I want to help is because I have a daughter and the last thing I want is for her to be abused, and to feel like nothing.  I want her to grow up and be a strong woman.

I love working with the staff at Gateway.  They are so much fun and so understanding.  I have learned so much from the women at Gateway (both staff and clients).
