Staff from a shelter in a small Colorado
town called the Gateway crisis line requesting assistance for Anita, a
28 year old Latina woman with 3 children. The woman had a 22-month old
girl, and two boys, ages 6 and 7 years old. She had experienced 9 years
of abuse including physical, emotional, and sexual. The precipitating
incident that brought her to a shelter program was over the baby
falling down and crying. The husband began slapping his wife in the
face, punched her in the back, threw her against the wall, kicked her
and locked her in a room. He then spanked the 22-month old child and
hit her on the back until she had bruises. The little girl then hit her
head on the table causing her nose to bleed but the father continued to
hit the child until she lost consciousness. He then let the mother out
of the room and blamed her for their daughter’s accident. The husband
began hitting the mother on the head and did not stop until she lost
her hearing. When her husband left for work, Anita and her children
were able to escape. She was admitted to the local shelter in her town
but did not feel safe in the same area as her husband. The shelter
staff called Gateway to request assistance. Arrangements were made for
transportation to Gateway. |
