Residential Services -- Caroline |
|
Caroline, a
Spanish-speaking woman called the Gateway Battered Women’s Service
24-hour crisis line. A friend had given her the telephone number. Her
husband, the batterer, was verbally and very physically abusive.
Caroline was afraid to call the police because the batterer had hidden
her immigration papers and told her she would be arrested and deported.
Caroline lived in fear and decided to come to the emergency shelter
with her two children. Caroline received individual and group
counseling sessions about domestic violence dynamics, surviving
domestic violence, self-esteem and independent living skills in her
native tongue. The children received group and individual counseling on
how to cope with surviving the violence. Referrals were given to TANF,
employment interviews, an agency that works with immigrants for papers,
a restraining order, clothing and housing. Caroline was accepted into a
long-term transitional housing program. GBWS counselors granted an
extension of stay until her apartment was ready. After 43 days, this
family moved into a safe home. Caroline began taking English classes
and also began Nonresidential Counseling in her native language that is
provided by GBWS. Caroline and her children are very optimistic about
what the future holds. |
