Emergency Shelter -- Cindi
Cindi was referred to Gateway Battered Women’s Services by a victim advocate from a local police department within Arapahoe County. Her husband, the batterer was mentally and physically abusive. He also practiced controlling and isolating behaviors. Cindi’s ability to make telephone calls and leave the home was very restricted. She confided in the children’s doctor and he called the authorities. The family was very much in crisis when they entered the shelter at GBWS. The first few days were spent allowing them to rest and reassuring the three children and their mother that they were indeed safe. The woman received many individual and group counseling sessions about domestic violence dynamics, surviving domestic violence and independent living skills. The children received individual and group counseling session to help them cope with surviving the violence. GBWS counselors gave the woman referrals for clothing, a restraining order, and housing. The woman decided she would never be safe in the Denver metro area and applied for a two-year domestic violence housing program in another state. GBWS counselors advocated for her and made several long distance calls to help with the arrangements for transfer. The counselors provided referrals to agencies that help with transportation and the woman received bus tickets for her family to move to safety. She arrived at her destination safely and is doing well in the program there.
