Crisis Line -- Mary
Mary called the crisis line very upset requesting information on the cycle of violence. She stated she had been married to Bob for 26 years and has a 16-year-old daughter. For most of their marriage, Bob had been physically and emotionally abusive. She described several severe physical abuse incidents that resulted in broken ribs and a concussion. By the end of the conversation, Mary disclosed that she has had a double mastectomy and has much difficulty dealing with her cancer. She also revealed that she was a professor and was terrified at reaching out because of her profession and issues with her daughter. She said her daughter was not aware of the abuse and that her husband was turning her daughter against her. Mary and the counselor discussed safety plans and then faxed her information on the cycle of violence, the power and control wheel and characteristics of a batterer and victim. A time was arranged to fax the information when her husband was out and discussed where to keep it so he would not find it. After receiving the fax, Mary called back to express her thanks. Several days later, Mary called again to request referrals for a therapist. We discussed the nonresidential program and private options. We talked with her about self-esteem. Mary contacted a psychologist through her health plan and still stays in touch. Her psychologist will refer her back for ongoing support services.
