Crisis Line -- Anita
Staff from a shelter in a small Colorado town called the Gateway crisis line requesting assistance for Anita, a 28 year old Latina woman with 3 children. The woman had a 22-month old girl, and two boys, ages 6 and 7 years old. She had experienced 9 years of abuse including physical, emotional, and sexual.

Residential Services -- Caroline
Caroline, a Spanish-speaking woman called the Gateway Battered Women’s Service 24-hour crisis line. A friend had given her the telephone number. Her husband, the batterer, was verbally and very physically abusive.

Crisis Line -- Julie
Julie called the Gateway Battered Women’s Services 24-hour crisis line. She had found the telephone number in the directory. The batterer, her boyfriend of two years, had hit her for the first time after months of verbal and mental abuse.

Emergency Shelter -- Cindi
Cindi was referred to Gateway Battered Women’s Services by a victim advocate from a local police department within Arapahoe County. Her husband, the batterer was mentally and physically abusive. He also practiced controlling and isolating behaviors.

Emergency Shelter -- Maria
Maria was referred by a low-income housing agency. She has been on their list for awhile and was still about one month away from having her home. Her batterer was verbally, physically, and monetarily abusive.

Extended Stay -- Suzanne
A metro area victim’s advocate referred Suzanne to Gateway Battered Women’s Shelter. After 19 years in a mentally and physically abusive marriage, she finally called 911 and was arrested for domestic violence because her batterer had defensive scratches on him. Suzanne pleaded not guilty by reason of self-defense.

Sue is a 25 year old Latina woman who arrived at the Shelter with her two children, ages 3 and 5 years old. Sue had been living with the batterer for the past 7 months and had married him four months ago.

Crisis Line -- Mary
Mary called the crisis line very upset requesting information on the cycle of violence. She stated she had been married to Bob for 26 years and has a 16-year-old daughter. For most of their marriage, Bob had been physically and emotionally abusive. She described several severe physical abuse incidents that resulted in broken ribs and a concussion.

Emergency Shelter - Gabby
Gabby and her 5 children called for assistance from Gateway’s emergency shelter to escape an abusive husband and father. The children were 3 to 12 years of age. Gabby had moved from Mexico with her husband to the United States 14 years ago. However, neither had established US citizenship. Together, they had 5 children. Her batterer was intensely abusive to both her and her 5 children.
